Common Problems 12/11/09 - READ HERE FIRST

Battle.net merged account login issue:
Update:
There are various problems relating to Battle.net accounts, from the looks of it it's not just related to WoW Tunnels & Proxies. There have been many users reporting on the official World of Warcraft forums problems logging in. These problems are mostly caused by DNS issues.

Invalid Game Server / Login server down Message
Code: Select all
Open C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\Etc

Now there should be a hosts file, right click the file and go to properties, now uncheck the "Read Only" property and click Ok.

Then open the hosts file with Notepad.

Add this to the end of the file:

12.129.206.130 us.logon.battle.net (or 213.248.127.130 eu.logon.battle.net) for EU sers.

Now save the hosts file and the error should be fixed.

If you're using Freecap please also double check the DNS resolution setting is set to "Local then Remote", if that doesn't work also try Local and Remote options.

Disconnecting / Spiking in raids / high activity encounters:
Most likely caused by lack of bandwidth - using WoW Tunnels use a bit more bandwidth than connecting normally. Hence if your connection can't handle the extra flow of information, it can cause extra lag spikes and possibly disconnections.

First thing is to check if you have this problem connecting normally (Without using WoW Tunnels)
If you have the same problem connecting normally without WoW Tunnels then WoW Tunnels will probably not help to fix it, rather worsen it. It is best to contact your ISP about it, or try it on another computer on the same network to check if it is a software issue.

Second thing to try if you haven't already, is to try another WoW Tunnels server and check if the problem is not related to a certain server only.

Some things that may help to fix:

Download and uploads below 250-500k/s can be problematic. Try using a server closer to you (Aussie1, Malaysia etc), although the best way is to find a good ISP that has good international bandwidth, even at peak times.

You get disconnected and Putty displays: Fatal error: Software caused connection abort.
This is a generic message simply caused by the loss of the connection. Many things can cause this. Sometimes your Internet connection may drop out for a brief moment due to bad line, router etc, and you won't notice if you're playing WoW normally as WoW has higher timeout periods before you get disconnected. However connecting through Putty you'll notice it more as it has a very short time out period so even if your internet connection gets disrupted for a small amount of time, the connection will be lost.

A suggested fix is to try a Putty alternative, Tunnelier:

You can download Tunnelier from here:
http://dl.bitvise.com/Tunnelier-Inst.exe

Once installed, run it and click the "Load Profile" on the left side, and use this profile, download here:
http://www.wowtunnels.com/downloads/wow ... nelier.tlp

Once loaded, you can change the server host from tunnel8.wowtunnels.com to whatever tunnel you wish to use.
Under Authentication, set the "Username" field to your WoW Tunnels username and click Login on the bottom.

You'll still need Freecap/Proxycap to launch WoW with the new Proxy connection. For instructions on how to set Freecap up, visit:
http://www.wowtunnels.com/instructions_manual

Make sure you view the second video, as the first video is for Putty.

The root cause however, still resides in some quality issues of your line/connection/router so if possible, borrow a friend's router or check the connection log the if your router supports it, to check any disconnections. Sometimes poor bandwidth can cause this too, as the connection can't keep up.

Opening WoW from Freecap closes instantly:
Common issue with this is that in Freecap settings, the server 127.0.0.1 is not set, if you change tabs in the config window it disappears, so make sure 127.0.0.1 is there and apply/save.

High latency upon connecting:
Sometimes your latency may be quite high upon joining, e.g. 2000-3000ms+
Try moving around, cast some spells, most likely you're not actually lagging. The ping indicator in WoW could be off and it starts off high. After about 20 minutes it should come down to normal.

If in doubt, you can use an addon like Quartz which adds a more accurate latency display by measuring the time from when you press the spell to when the spell actually starts casting.

How to ping the servers manually for checking / troubleshooting

Windows XP: Click on Start -> Run, type in "cmd" and then press enter.
Windows Vista / 7: Click on Start, type "cmd" into the search box and press enter.

A black console window should open, then type:

How to perform a packet loss test

Same as above, but type:
ping tunnel1.wowtunnels.com -t

(Replace tunnel1.wowtunnels.com with any server you wish to test).

Let the test run for 5 minutes (10 minutes preferred), then press CTRL+C to stop the test.

Make sure you copy the average results on the bottom by right clicking inside the command prompt and choosing "mark" to highlight text then press enter to copy it.

How to perform a trace route to the servers for troubleshooting

Repeat as above to open a command prompt, then type:

How to perform a speed test / ping test

Speedtest: Go to http://www.speedtest.net

Then on the small minimap, find the location of that correspond to the location of your WoW Tunnels server.
Tunnel = Los Angeles, CA, US
Central = Dallas, TX, US
East = New York, US
Europe = Amsterdam, Netherlands

Then select that server for testing. Remember to note down the image of the result it provides you.

Pingtest: Go to http://www.pingtest.net

Similar instructions as above.

Putty clean up

If you have old sessions left over in the registry from other proxy services or old WoW Tunnels servers, follow this guide to clean it up:

Create a shortcut to Putty.exe, then modify the "target" of the shortcut by right clicking the shortcut and going to properties.

Now in the target field add "-cleanup" at the end of Putty.exe

e.g.
D:\Users\Desktop\wowtunnels\putty.exe -cleanup

For directories with spaces you will need to add quotes, then add -cleanup after the quotes":

"D:\Users\Desktop\wow tunnels\putty.exe" -cleanup

Then double click the shortcut, it should launch Putty and clean up the registry settings. You can delete the shortcut afterwards.
